Festina Lente Victorian Walled Gardens & Garden Centre are delighted to be able to offer a second series of adult gardening workshops presented by our qualified horticulturists in 2019.

You will gain the knowledge and skills to successfully compost your waste, learn about how to deal with garden pests and diseases, learn more about growing herbs and growing protected crops under cover and finally learn all about various plant propagation!

Our experienced Horticulturist will deliver the workshops, right here in Co Wicklow in an informal and enjoyable setting of Festina Lente Walled Gardens in Bray.

These are practical courses as well learning theory. All seeds and tools are supplied as part of the course.  All Attendees also get 10% off Garden Plants & Tools from our Garden Centre on the day of the Workshops!

Composting is the most environmentally friendly way of dealing with kitchen and garden waste producing an excellent soil improver.
We will look at the following in this workshop:
• How to build a compost bay.
• The correct location in your Garden
• How to make the best compost to enrich your soil
• What material to add to the compost bay to create the best compost and correct procedures in doing so

Pest and Disease control
We will look at the following in this workshop:
• Identify the most troublesome pests and diseases
• Discover how to control pests and diseases through the integrated pest management system. This will give the grower a basic understanding on how to manage crops using an IPM system. The IPM programme will be covered in detail on the day
• How Pest and disease influence the growth, quality and yield of vegetable and ornamental plants.
• Gain an understanding and appreciation on how pest and diseases develop on crops

Introduction to growing herbs
We will look at the following in this workshop:
• How to create and design an herb garden
• Most popular 20 culinary herbs
• The best way to cultivate herbs
• Yearly maintenance
• Harvesting techniques.

Growing protected crops under cover
Growing crops undercover will demonstrate the potential to start the season off early as well as extending the growth potential at the lateral end of the year and we will discuss the different types of covers.

Plant Propagation
Become familiar with the many ways that is possible to increase plant stock at different times of the year.
In this workshop we will take time to look closely at the different methods in which one can increase their own stock of plants from home. Learn the skills and techniques required to properly increase plant supply for a min cost to you.
Under the following headings we will look at
• Plant Division
• Tree grafting
• Cuttings / Striking
• Seed sowing/ Seed collection
• Layering

These workshops will take place from April to June on a Wednesday evening from 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Festina Lente is a non-profit charity and all profits from these workshops go to the upkeep of the gardens and providing opportunities for people with disabilities.

We will be running the five Workshops in 2019 at a low cost price of only €65! We do not offer these workshops individually, they must be purchased as a series of five.
