Deirdre’s focus as Community Connector is to develop better literacy skills amongst the men and women on the service, through classroom based learning and other activities. She has a strong interest in sustainability and she is bringing this focus to her work, with the students growing food in the gardens to cook and eat, to encourage a healthy lifestyle. She aims to foster confidence through working with people’s strengths and creating meaningful engagement in the community. Deirdre has extensive experience in working with people who experience inequality in all forms, using everyday tasks such as gardening to connect and create learning experiences. She holds a BSc in Education and Training from DCU, and previously worked as a fitness instructor and holistic massage therapist. Outside of work she loves growing her own food and creating amazing meals, and loves brightly coloured fabric and art. You’ll find her happiest in her garden with a brightly coloured dress and wellies!
